يعمل برنامج مكافحة العمى والصمم والوقاية منهما مع الدول الأعضاء والشركاء والمراكز المتعاونة من أجل وضع استراتيجيات لصحة العين والوقاية من العمى وضعف البصر في إقليم شرق المتوسط. وكجزء من المبادرة العالمية للقضاء على العمى الذي يمكن تجنبه بحلول عام 2020، "الرؤية 2020: الحق في الإبصار" التي تهدف إلى القضاء على الأسباب الرئيسية للعمى الذي يمكن تجنبه في إقليم شرق المتوسط بحلول عام 2020.
وتشمل أنشطة الوقاية من حالات الصمم وضعف السمع العمل مع الدول الأعضاء للحد من والقضاء في نهاية المطاف على ضعف السمع والإعاقات السمعية التي يمكن تجنبه من خلال تدابير وقائية وتأهيلية.
