كان موضوع اليوم العالمي للصحة لعام 2005 حول صحة النساء والأطفال. ترتبط رفاهية المجتمعات ارتباطاً مباشراً مع صحة وحياة الأمهات والأطفال. ومع ذلك يموت كثير من الأمهات والأطفال أو يعانون من تأثيرات اعتلال الصحة، وضعف التغذية وعدم كفاية الرعاية الصحية. تحدث جميع هذه الوفيات تقريباً في الدول منخفضة ومتوسطة الدخل، وبصورة رئيسية بين أفقر الفقراء.
ويجري تنظيم احتفالات في جميع أنحاء العالم لزيادة الوعي بهذه المعاناة غير المبررة، وهناك حاجة لجهود الجميع لضمان الحياة والصحة الجيدة بين هؤلاء الأعضاء الأعزاء من المجتمع.
