Crédit photo : OMS.Dans les pays à revenu faible, il arrive que la moitié de la population n’ait pas un accès fiable à des médicaments essentiels de qualité. Les médicaments sont indisponibles dans les établissements de santé publics ou alors à un prix inabordable. À l’échelle mondiale, ce manque d’accès entraîne des millions de décès dus à des maladies évitables ou traitables. Pourtant, on considère aujourd’hui que l’accès aux médicaments fait partie des droits humains universels.
Le programme OMS sur les politiques en matière de médicaments essentiels et de produits pharmaceutiques a pour objectif de sauver des vies et d’améliorer la santé en assurant la qualité, l’efficacité, l’innocuité et l'usage rationnel des médicaments, y compris dans le cadre des médecines traditionnelles. Ce programme vise à promouvoir un accès équitable et pérenne aux médicaments essentiels, en particulier pour les populations pauvres et défavorisées.
