Development of National Child Health Policy - Phase I: The Situation Analysis | 2004 This document, available in three languages, is part of a series of documents produced by the Child and Adolescent Health and Development unit to assist countries in efforts to improve the quality of children’s lives through integrated approaches. A national child health policy document is a key instrument for setting clear long-term directions and for bringing together the main elements of child health. At a time when all Member States have pledged to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, a national health policy will enable countries to “institutionalize” this commitment and translate it into stronger action, and will also serve as valuable reference to harmonize actions among partners. Guide to planning for implementation of IMCI at district level | 2008 This guide has been developed to assist in improving the overall planning process and especially in building the planning capacity of district staff. Proper planning is crucial for the successful implementation of any programme. District staff have a crucial role in planning for and implementing public health approaches, including their monitoring, more so in an increasingly decentralized system. IMCI pre-service education (training)
The IMCI pre-service education package proposes a standard approach to assist teaching institutions in introducing, implementing and assessing undergraduate teaching programmes including the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness strategy (IMCI).
Medical and allied health professional schools play a key role in preparing the future cadres of health providers who will be providing child health care services in a country, whether in the public or private sector.
Medical schools in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region have taken steps in recent years to introduce the IMCI approach into the undergraduate teaching programmes, in collaboration with the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.

Framework for the community component of the integrated child care strategy | 2002 This document proposes a framework for integrated community child care to guide national public health managers in planning community actions in the context of the strategy on Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI). The family and the community where children live play a major role in child development. The IMCI community component aims at improving good child care practices at home and in the community. While many interventions and projects exist at community level which concern child health, there has been some delay in countries in integrating such interventions into a comprehensive child care strategy that includes a well developed community approach. Counselling on infant and young child feeding: training materials
The Regional Arabic training materials on “Counselling on Infant and Young Child Feeding” emphasize the use of effective counselling techniques.
A new training methodology, based on the IMCI training, is used to enable skill acquisition.
The materials are designed for physicians, who are influential providers and can play a major role in guiding, assisting and supporting mothers and families in child feeding.
Cultural and social aspects of countries in the Region have been carefully considered in the development of the training package.

Evaluation (surveys)
These evaluations aim to assess the quality of outpatient health care services provided to children below 5 years old at health facilities.
The surveys provide a rich mine of quantitative and qualitative information, including both clinical and health system support components of care.
They report on a list of standardized indicators, useful to monitor improvements in child health care services.
