Efficient and responsive emergency services crucial in saving lives
"When disasters strike or accidents occur, hospitals and healthcare centers should be a sanctuary where victims and patients can be brought to safety and accorded the best treatment possible to aid in the healing and recovery process," highlighted His Excellency the Minister of Health in Kurdistan region.
Dr Taher A. Hawramy during a joint Ministry of Health-World Health Organization visit to the Erbil main emergency hospital to observe the quality of emergency services being provided. H.E. Dr Hawramy was accompanied by the WHO Representative for Iraq Dr Syed Jaffer Hussain as well as senior delegates from the Ministry of Health and WHO staff members from the Iraq country office and the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.
Iraq free of malaria… a new success and upcoming challenge
A spraying campaign done in IraqErbil, 25 April 2011: “Iraq is Malaria free since 2009” – this was the announcement revealed today by H.E Dr. Majid Hamad Amin, the Minister of Health Iraq and H.E Dr. Taher Hawrami the Minister of Health in Kurdistan Region-Iraq, during a ceremony conducted in Erbil on the occasion of World Malaria Day 2011 with the presence of more than 200 senior and high-ranking officials representing, ministries, academic institutions, civil societies and media representatives.
“Achieving Progress and Impact” is the theme of this year’s World Malaria Day that Iraq, with the financial and political commitment of its government, and through the collective efforts of the Iraqi community, health workers and international partners could translate into action. H.E Dr. Majid stated: “We are today here to highlight this considerable progress, take stock of lessons learnt in collectively striving towards eliminating malaria in Iraq and investing for a healthier future.

World Health Day 2011 - COMBAT DRUG RESISTANCE, NO action today, NO cure tomorrow.
Baghdad, 10 April 2011 – “Save lives and protect health by keeping precious antimicrobial medicines effective to combat diseases” a joint call released today by the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization, as part of an awareness campaign to mark this year’s World Health Day.

Many of us live longer and healthier lives today, partly because of powerful and effective medicines known as antimicrobials that are available to treat infectious diseases. However the combination of overuse particularly for minor infections, misuse due to lack of access to appropriate treatment and under use due to lack of financial support to complete treatment courses are key drivers of drug resistance that may lead to avoidable deaths, greater suffering and disability, and unnecessary high health-care costs.
