Iranians learn from Brazilian family medicine programme, December 2011

Islamic Republic of Iran began adopting a family practice approach, based on primary health care, in 2005 in rural areas and cities with populations of less than 20 000.

In 2011, the programme has been expanded and piloted in urban areas with populations of less than 50 000 in three selected provinces. To learn from the experiences of other countries 10 senior health official from the Ministry of Health and Medical Education visited Brazil to learn more about the Brazilian family practice programme.

The objectives of the visit were to:

  • explore the development of the family medicine programme in Brazil from its implementation in 1994
  • study in detail the work of the family medicine teams in urban, rural and slum settings
  • obtain an overview of associated development in education and training of human resources (general practitioners and nurses)
  • look at the way the Brazilians have developed an integrated approach to health service delivery through family medicine
  • become familiar with the financing of the health system, in particular the family medicine programme and the role of the Federal Government and municipalities
  • discuss policies, strategies and operation of the family medicine programme.
