The WHO Representative’s Office in Islamic Republic of Iran supports the Government and health authorities at central and local level in strengthening health services, addressing public health issues and supporting and promoting research for health.
Physicians, public health specialists, scientists, social scientists and epidemiologists provide appropriate technical support and collaboration upon the request or acceptance of national authorities.
As the lead health agency, WHO works with many partners to support countries in reaching their national health development goals and to ensure that its efforts are coordinated. Across the Region, these include United Nations agencies, humanitarian and development partners, donors, nongovernmental organizations, WHO collaborating centres and the private sector.
Health Protection and Promotion (HPP) Unit in WHO Iran
This unit works on the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health as well as protection of health treating situations. It moves beyond a focus on individual behaviour towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions through health in all policies. The unit covers the following areas of WHO work in Iran:
Family Health: Improving the IMCI pre-service education in medical universities as well as improving quality of existing services like surveillance systems, establishing adolescent health services in the PHC based on country situation analysis, decreasing Caesarean Section rate amounted to 48%, developing a comprehensive family health information system and improving quality of services are other fields of mutual cooperation.
Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases (Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, Cancer and Respiratory Conditions); and its risk factors (Unhealthy diet, tobacco use , and physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol), healthy lifestyle promotion: NCDs are contributed to 73% of the mortality in Iran. Improving previously established country programmes like hypertension, diabetes, cancer control and risk factor surveillance system, strengthening physical activity and healthy community diet programmes are some the field of collaboration base on WHO Strategy.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse
Iran with WHO technical assistance has developed two multi sectoral models for integration of mental health and substance abuse in current PHC and family physician programme and intends to pilot them.
