Adham R Ismail Abdel-Moneim MSc, MBA, MPH, PhD,
WHO Representative in Iraq Dr Adham R Ismail Abdel-Moneim was assigned to the role of WHO Representative in Iraq in January 2020, a position he had previously occupied on an acting basis since August 2018.
Prior to becoming the WHO Representative in Iraq, Dr Abdel-Moneim worked for 13 years as lead for the essential medicines and health technologies programme in the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean in Cairo, Egypt. His duties, among others, involved providing support to countries in:
- developing national strategies and programmes;
- designing regional tools/guidelines;
- promoting intersectoral collaboration with relevant institutions; and
- strengthening national capacities in this special area.
Prior to joining WHO, Dr Abdel-Moneim worked as a professor in several academic institutions in Egypt and the United States of America during which time he published many articles in renowned peer-reviewed journals and participated in many national and international conferences.
He has over 20 years of experience in clinical and biomedical engineering.
Coupled with his extensive work experience, Dr Abdel-Moneim has three Masters’ degrees in Public Health from the University of Roehampton (United Kingdom), Biomedical Engineering from Alexandria University (Egypt), and Business Administration from the Arab Academy for Science and Technology. He is also a holder of a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from University of Miami (United States of America).

Dr Ahmed Zouiten, WHO Representative
Dr Ahmed Zouiten is a medical doctor and a public health professional from Fez, Morocco. He graduated from the School of Medicine in Mohamed V University in Rabat.
Dr Zouiten has a great passion for humanity and for contributing to the betterment of people’s lives, in particular their health. He started his career with Médecins Sans Frontières fighting HIV and treating AIDS patients in many countries in Africa and southeast Asia.
He joined the World Health Organization in 2006 and assumed different responsibilities at the country level, as well as at WHO headquarters, with a focus initally on HIV in humanitarian settings before diversifying into health emergencies. In 2010, he led the Global Health Cluster and had the privilege to coordinate the health response in several major emergencies (Haiti 2010, Somalia 2011, Syria 2012, Mali 2013, Iraq 2014, and Yemen 2017).
In 2018, appointed as WHO Representative in Djibouti, he focused WHO's support to Djibouti in improving the performance of the health system and making progress towards universal health coverage and the health-related Sustainable Development Goals. He has always believed in a world where health is a fundamental human right and not merely a privilege for those who can afford it, and he is proud to uphold this principle as he begins his work in the WHO country office in Iraq as WHO Representative and Head of Mission.
