Islamabad, 9 January 2015 - A 3-day training course on community-based disaster risk management was organized by the National Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Network (NHEPRN) with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Islamabad.
The training was conducted in collaboration with the district health office for the lady health workers and health supervisors of districts of Rawalpindi. The training was based on the manual of community-based disaster risk management, which was developed by NHEPRN and WHO. Rescue 1122, a Punjab governmental institution, and the nongovernmental organization the Network for Disaster Management Practitioners actively participated in facilitation and delivered their expertise to the participants.
Dr Munir Ahmed Mangrio, Director General, NHEPRN, during his address at the opening ceremony, emphasized the need to involve community workers for effective disaster risk management as they are the first responders in disasters and emergencies. He further said that they should prepare themselves and their communities for an effective response to disasters.
Dr Fawad Khan, WHO Emergency Coordinator, said that WHO’s larger aim is to prepare the community for health emergencies and equip the workers with the best of the expertise and knowledge. He thanked NHSR&C and the lady health workers for their facilitation and participation in the training workshop.
At the closing ceremony completion and recognition certificates were distributed among participants and facilitators by the Director General Dr Munir Ahmed Mangrio and Dr Fawad Khan.
