An expert consultation on Generating Evidence for Infectious Diseases with Epidemic Potential was organized by WHO, Wellcome Trust, University of Oxford and TDR on 20 October 2015. Thirty global experts were convened to evaluate past performance in order to inform future practices. Participants were asked to map methods for clinical research (and the usual indications for their use) against epidemic attributes; identify work that needs to be conducted to evaluate the suitability of clinical trial designs to different epidemic types and contexts; and describe the elements of a ‘toolkit’ for evidence generation in epidemics.
