The number of yellow fever cases reported from the Darfur region of Sudan since the end of October 2012 has decreased. As of 20 December 2012, a total of 849 suspected cases of yellow fever, including 171 deaths (case-fatality rate 20.2%), have been reported in 35 out of 64 localities in Darfur. No cases have been reported in the last few weeks (Figure 1).
In response to the yellow fever outbreak, the Federal Ministry of Health organized an emergency mass vaccination campaign against yellow fever. The first phase of the campaign began on 21 November 2012, to cover 2.2 million people, and the second phase of the campaign began in December covering an additional 1.2 million at-risk population. In January 2013, the Federal Ministry of Health conducted the third and final phase of the mass vaccination campaign covering the remaining 2 million at-risk population in Darfur.
The vaccination campaign has been supported by the International Coordinating Group on Yellow Fever Vaccine Provision, GAVI Alliance, ECHO, Central Emergency Response Fund, Sudan Common Humanitarian Fund, and nongovernmental organizations in places where the campaign has been carried out.
WHO Regional Office has supported the Federal Ministry of Health and other health partners in Sudan for investigation and effective control of this outbreak.
