Workshop on tuberculosis control, 11–12 September 2013

WHO in collaboration with the Ministry of Health conducted a workshop on tuberculosis (TB) control  between 11 and 12 September 2013.

The main objective of the workshop was to enhance TB case detection and to effectively implement the WHO-recommended DOTS strategy under current circumstances.

The workshop was attended by 60 participants from the Directorate of Communicable and Chronic Diseases at the central and local levels.

Workshop attendees participated interactively in all discussions concerning strategies to improve TB case detection and treatment. They also recommended to continue training activities for building the capacity of TB staff in order to achieve the programme objectives.

Workshop on brucellosis, 4-5 September 2013

As a rapid response to the increased number of brucellosis cases in Damascus and Rural Damascus detected through the early warning and response system (EWARS), WHO in collaboration with the Ministry of Health conducted a workshop on brucellosis between 4 and 5 September 2013

The main objectives of the workshop were to enhance the skills of concerned physicians on managing brucellosis cases based on the national treatment protocol, strengthen the surveillance of brucellosis as well as the laboratory role on brucellosis detection and activate the role of other sectors (i.e. the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Information) in containing the increased numbers of cases.

The workshop was attended by 32 participants from the Directorate of Communicable and Chronic Diseases, concerned physicians of health centres, and heads of brucellosis programmes in Damascus, Rural Damascus, Daraa, Suwayda and Al Quneitra.

Attendees interactively participated in all presentations, and proposed conducting such workshops continuously and maintaining close collaboration between the WHO and the Ministry of Health to contain the brucellosis outbreak.

EWARS review workshop, 28 July 2013

WHO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, conducted a workshop for discussing the preliminary results of a review of the Early Warning Alert and Response System (EWARS), on 28 July 2013.

The main objectives of the workshop were to conduct an interactive discussion with concerned persons regarding the preliminary results of a review of EWARS and the possibility of implementing the proposed recommendation (feasibility test) and to identify additional items for review.

The workshop was attended by 34 participants from the Directorate of Communicable and Chronic Diseases, the Directorate of Primary Health Care, Director of Planning and International Cooperation of the Ministry of Health, and concerned WHO staff.

The main recommendation of the workshop was to sustain the collaboration between the WHO and the Ministry of Health for improving EWARS and overcoming the gaps identified.
