28 May 2015 – Pakistan released its Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) factsheet and executive summary in a press conference hosted by the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. Conducted in 2014, GATS Pakistan surveyed adults 15 years and older. Key survey highlights include:
23.9 million adults currently used tobacco in any form.
15.6 million adults currently smoked tobacco.
9.6 million adults currently used smokeless tobacco.
3.7 million adults currently used waterpipes (hookah/shisha).

In Pakistan, GATS was conducted by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), under the coordination of Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC) and World Health Organization (WHO). The survey had the support of the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean of the World Health Organization (WHO), the WHO Country Office in Pakistan, CDC, the CDC Foundation, and RTI International. As with the other participating countries, results from GATS will assist Pakistan in translating data into action to improve policies and programs.
About GATS
The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is a global standard for systematically monitoring adult tobacco use (smoking and smokeless) and tracking key tobacco control indicators.
GATS is a nationally representative survey, using a consistent and standard protocol across countries including Pakistan. GATS enhances countries’ capacity to design, implement and evaluate tobacco control programs. It also assists countries in fulfilling their obligations under the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) to generate comparable data within and across countries.
GATS is supported by the CDC Foundation with grants from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In addition, select countries have provided funding or in-kind support.
