On 10 July 2013, the WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic, 2013 was launched at global level. This report is the fourth in the series of WHO reports on: the latest global and country data on the prevalence of tobacco use; and the status of the MPOWER measures that provide countries with practical assistance to reduce demand for tobacco in line with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
The 2013 report focuses on enforcing bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship – which are one of the most powerful measures to control tobacco use. Globally, 3 billion people are now covered by national tobacco control campaigns. And although this means that hundreds of millions of nonsmokers are less likely to start still, more action is required at global and regional levels.
In this regard, the Regional Office is compiling a data package based on this report, specific to the Eastern Mediterranean Region, to present countries with the information needed to implement more comprehensive tobacco control programmes that protect populations from tobacco-related illness, disability and death.
