More than 320 000 people are reported to have been affected by the powerful earthquake that struck Morocco at about 22:30 on 8 September 2023.

The epicentre of the magnitude-6.8 earthquake was in Al Haouz province, with at least eight other provinces affected. The earthquake and several aftershocks caused thousands of deaths and injuries and devastated the most affected areas.

Severe damage occurred to infrastructure, including health facilities, especially in the historic city of Marrakesh, as well as to villages in the High Atlas mountains.

Government authorities are leading the response effort. The international community and the United Nations, including WHO, are responding to the growing needs in the aftermath of the earthquake.

WHO works closely with the Moroccan Ministry of Health and Social Protection to ensure that health care is provided to the affected populations in line with the health situation and health needs.
