Baghdad, 14 April 2015 - The World Health Organization, Iraq, in coordination with the Communicable Disease Control Centre, Public Health Directorate, and Iraqi Ministry of Health, organized a first ever joint bi-annual planning workshop for the communicable disease control programme from 6 to 8 April 2015.
In his opening remarks, Dr Syed Jaffar Hussain said that all communities must be involved in response activities so as to create tangible improvements in the reach and quality of health services, including national immunization days, if the response to controlling communicable diseases was to be successful.
The conference was organized to review: essential approaches in public health and primary health care (PHC) programmes in ordinary and crisis circumstances; joint and efficient budgeting of PHC programmes in all situations; and to review of contingency workplans for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees. It was attended by 130 participants, including health care providers and decision-makers from the Centre for Disease Control in Iraq, UN partners and nongovernmental organizations to conduct a review and planning for public health issues with special focus on IDPs and returnees.
During 3 days, all units in the communicable disease programme drafted workplans and budgets that will be implemented in the next 2 years (2015-2016). In addition, costings were also made for emergency logistics and medicines that will be used for combating communicable diseases and joint workplans between Ministry of Health, WHO and other UN and international organizations, including UNICEF and UN Women for crisis management were drafted.
The conference provided an opportunity for the Ministry of Health, WHO and partners to comprehensively exchange information on communicable diseases while developing solution to the underlying issues in the country. The drafted bi annual plans will be finalized with the technical assistance of WHO and will provide a road map to deal with prevention and control of communicable diseases with a special focus on emergency.
One of the key recommendation made during the meeting was that the Ministry of Health will identify focal points for different prioritized areas agreed on during the conference, Well-conceived work plans for different components are available which are agreed to be finalized within one week in coordination with my team.
