Baghdad 26 May 2016 – A 5-day workshop on project management took place in Erbil in March 2016. The aims of the workshop were to enhance the knowledge and skills of Directorate of Health engineering staff in performing professional project management in the day-to-day business environment, in addition to planning, executing and controlling a project from initiation to close in order that they can be better prepared when responding to emergencies.
Through presentations and discussions participants looked at ways to foresee or predict potential dangers and problems arising in project management, and to plan, organize and control activities so that a project could be completed as successfully as possible in spite of all the risks.
22 engineering staff from Erbil Directorate of Health attended the workshop and were given a thorough insight into:
- breaking projects into logical phases
- specifying the primary activities that occur in each phase
- creating a work breakdown structure for any project with clear activities
- identifying activity duration and making appropriate adjustments, as needed
- quantifying and giving priorities to risks in managing a project
- using tools for measuring project progress in terms of time, cost and deliverables.
Implementing an effective project management concept helps to plan, coordinate and control complex and diverse project activities. It is fundamental to ensuring better and more rational management of joint projects.
The objectives of the workshop were successfully achieved through a combination of lectures, group sessions, plenary discussions and pre- and post-testing. The pre- and post-testing demonstrated the positive impact of the workshop with participants’ results increasing from 35% to 60% over the 5 days.
