Photo: WHO11 August 2015 | Baghdad – WHO has dispatched an emergency consignment of life-saving medicines and medical supplies to health facilities in Haditha City and Al-Baghdadi district.
The Ministry of Health supported the airlifting of this consignment through Al Asad airbase in Al Anbar governorate, 180 km west of Baghdad. The consignment contained 7 interagency emergency health kits, which included one basic kit (containing essential medicines), two surgical kits, two trauma A and B kits, and one interagency diarrhoeal basic kit. The total consignment is sufficient to treat 16 000 people for a duration of 3 months.
Haditha City, which hosts approximately 80 000 people, is supported by one general hospital with a capacity of 200 beds and 14 primary health care centres, 6 of which are not functioning due to varying degrees of damage. Al-Baghdadi district, meanwhile, has 3 primary health care centres of which only one, located in the housing compound near Al-Asad airbase, is operational.
Previous attempts to deliver 4854 kg of medical supplies to Haditha and 1473 kg to Al-Baghdadi failed to reach the targeted destination due to an escalation of conflict.
