Community involvement and intersectoral action to address the social determinants of health, 30 May 2012

Participants of the workshop on community involvement and intersectoral action to address the social determinants of healthFour intersectoral action plans to enhance the health status of population living in Basra, Missan, Thi Qar and Sulaimaniyah were developed in Sulaymaniyah, in collaboration with the local authorities from different sectors and the technical support of WHO as part of the local area development programme to act as a bridge to phase 2.

The action plans were developed through four thematic consultation workshops conducted between February and May 2012. Each of the consultation workshops was attended by about 30 stakeholders from the concerned sectors, including representatives from the province councils, districts local authorities and health directorates. During the deliberation, participants discussed their priority health issues in relation to Millennium Development Goals number 4, 5 and 6, and proposed viable interventions in order to address some of the main social determinants of health, such as literacy, poverty, sanitation and nutrition to improving the health status of people.
