Baghdad, 21 June 2017: In its continuing efforts to cope with the increased demand for health services in displacement camps, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health yesterday inaugurated a new primary health care centre in Laylan C internally displaced person’s camp, 20 km south east Kirkuk governorate.
The health facility is the third primary health care centre to be constructed by WHO in Kirkuk since the beginning of the displacement crisis in June 2014. It will serve a population of over 15000 internally displaced persons mainly from the Kirkuk district of Hawija. The health facility will be run by Kirkuk General Directorate of Health, in coordination with the World Vision NGO, to deliver a wide range of preventive and curative health services.
“The health situation in Hawija remains a concern for WHO and partners” said Altaf Musani, WHO Representative in Iraq. “However, we will continue supporting the Ministry of Health and Kirkuk Department of Health to provide accessible health care services to the affected population in all IDP camps in the governorate. We have a shortage of funds but are mobilizing all available resources to maintain support in the two areas of providing trauma and primary health care services,” Musani added.
The centre is equipped with 12 consultation rooms, including a laboratory, pharmacy, health education hall, and an immunization, examination, and dressing rooms. It is also staffed by a team of doctors and paramedics working in shifts to provide health care services round the clock.
The primary health care centre was established following a request from Kirkuk DOH to support Laylan C camp with a primary health care centre to meet the expected caseload resulting from new influx of displacement from Hawija area. The camp that has capacity 2500 tents is so far the only camp with available space to receive new arrivals. It was served by WHO supported mobile medical clinic to provide essential health care services to IDPs before the establishment of the new centre.
In addition to the construction of a clinic in Laylan 1 IDP camp in 2015 and another health facility in Laylan II early this year, WHO has been supporting the referral system in six IDP camps in Kirkuk to ensure timely referrals 24/7.
