The Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, adopted in September 2011, spelled out several commitments to be fulfilled by WHO, Member States and international partners.
Furthermore, the regional Strategic direction on noncommunicable diseases (2012–2016) emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration and partnership with regional noncommunicable disease alliances, such as the International Diabetes Federation, Middle East and North Africa Region (IDF/MENA) to support Member States in implementation of the Political Declaration of the United Nations.
Recently, the commitments have been translated into a framework for strategic interventions, which was endorsed by all Member States at the Fifty-ninth Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, held in October 2012.
In view of the above, the first regional meeting of WHO Regional Office and the IIDF/MENA was held in Cairo, Egypt, from 11 to 13 April 2013. The meeting provided a suitable platform to strengthen partnership between WHO and the IDF in scaling up action on the prevention of diabetes in the Region.
The objectives of the meeting were to:
- explore the role of the IDF/MENA in supporting the implementation of the Political Declaration of the United Nations and the regional framework for action on the commitments of Member States and developing an outline of collaboration in implementing the strategic framework for action on noncommunicable diseases.
- strengthen collaboration with the IDF/ MENA and the role of regional civil societies.
