An intercountry meeting was held to develop regional guidelines for the development and implementation of national strategies and programmes for the prevention and management of haemoglobinopathies and genetic diseases in the Region. The meeting was planned and organized by the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, USA.
The objectives of the meeting were to:
review the national capacity for the prevention and management of genetic diseases and haemoglobinopathies in the Region
provide Member States and relevant stakeholders with guidelines for the development and implementation of national strategies, policies and programmes required for the prevention and effective management of haemoglobinopathies and genetic diseases
provide Member States and relevant stakeholders technical support in assessment of the burden of haemoglobinopathies within the population (public health surveillance and epidemiologic analysis), management (screening and care), and awareness (health education) of haemoglobinopathies and genetic diseases.
