WHO conducts typhoid vaccination campaign

24 June 2021 – Pakistan became the first country in the world to introduce the World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) into its routine immunization programme in 2019. 

It is the first typhoid vaccine that can be given to children as young as 6 months of age and confers longer term protection against typhoid. WHO is working closely with the government of Pakistan and partners to ensure the highest quality campaign.

The campaign is being carried out by skilled and trained vaccinators at health facilities or outreach sites in local communities.

WHO Representative visits COVID-19 vaccination centre and pledges support to strengthen services

3 June 2021 – WHO Representative to Pakistan Dr Palitha Mahipala, accompanied by WHO Expanded Programme on Immunization Team Lead Dr Osama Mere visited a COVID-19 vaccination facility in F-9 Park, Islamabad, at the invitation of the District Health Officer of Islamabad Dr Zaeem Zia.

WHO Representative to Pakistan Dr Palitha Mahipala, accompanied by WHO Expanded Programme on Immunization Team Lead Dr Osama Mere visited a COVID-19 vaccination facility in F-9 Park, Islamabad, at the invitation of the District Health Officer of Islamabad Dr Zaeem Zia.WHO Representative to Pakistan Dr Palitha Mahipala (centre) is briefed by District Health Officer of Islamabad Dr Zaeem Zia (far right)

The purpose of the visit was to assess the operational capacity of the vaccination facility to expand the age bracket of those eligible for COVID-19 vaccination to 30 years of age and older.

Dr Mahipala expressed his appreciation of the Government of Pakistan's efforts in expanding the capacity of the vaccination facility which he said would go a long way in improving vaccination coverage and access to vaccines in Islamabad. Dr Mahipala commended the staff for their dedicated service and pledged WHO’s support in strengthening services at the vaccination centre.

Over 13 million children vaccinated with typhoid conjugate vaccine in Punjab and Islamabad

10 March 2021 – Pakistan’s largest province Punjab and Islamabad completed the first phase of the typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) campaign in 12 out of the 24 districts of Punjab on 15 February 2021. More than 13 million children between 9 months and 15 years of age were vaccinated over 2 weeks. The federal and provincial government, in close collaboration with WHO and partners, organized the campaign in 12 districts of Punjab that marks the formal introduction of typhoid conjugate vaccine in routine immunization schedule of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) in this province.
