Workshop on brucellosis, 25–26 September 2013

WHO in collaboration with the Ministry of Health conducted a workshop on the brucellosis programme in treatment centres, between 25 and 26 September 2013.

The main objectives of the workshop were to enhance the skills of the concerned physicians on managing brucellosis cases based on the national treatment protocol, strengthen the surveillance of brucellosis as well as the laboratory role in brucellosis detection, and activate the role of other sectors (i.e. the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Information) in containing the outbreak.

The workshop was attended by 53 participants from the Directorate of Communicable and Chronic Diseases, physicians from health centres, and brucellosis programme coordinators in Damascus, rural Damascus, Daraa, As Suwayda, and Quneitra

The main recommendation of the workshop was to maintain the collaboration between WHO and the Ministry of Health to contain the brucellosis outbreak.

Tuberculosis workshop, 18-19 September 2013

WHO in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Syria conducted a workshop on the tuberculosis control programme between 18 and 19 September 2013.

The main objective of the workshop was to improve active case finding in shelters for internally displaced populations, including patients with multi-drug resistance.

The workshop was attended by 51 participants from the Directorate of Communicable and Chronic Diseases and concerned WHO staff.

The participants suggested activating the role of the laboratories in detecting tuberculosis cases in rural Damascus, Qunaterah and Daraa, training all newly appointed staff members and sustaining the collaboration between WHO and the Ministry of Health on tuberculosis control.

EWARS expansion workshop, 15-17 September 2013

WHO in collaboration with the ministry of health conducted a workshop on the Early Warning Alert and Response System (EWARS) to involve the health points of shelters for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in different governorates in the EWARS programme, from 15 to 17 September 2013

The main objectives of the workshop were to expand the EWARS and to improve knowledge and skills on rapid response for diseases reported under the EWARS programme for physicians in the health points serving the shelters.

The workshop was attended by 43 participants from Damascus, Rural Damascus and Al Quneitra.

As a result of the workshop, health points for IDP shelters became part of the system and will report directly to the EWARS programme starting from November 2013.
