6 April 2017 – The Government of Japan has recently donated more than US$ 17 million to support WHO’s emergency health response in Syria.
WHO welcomes the continued generosity of the Government of Japan, which will allow WHO to pursue its critical life-saving humanitarian health interventions for people in need throughout Syria.
WHO will use the funds to purchase urgently-needed state-of-the-art medical equipment (including machines for CT scans and magnetic resonance imaging) for hospitals and primary health care centres across the country. WHO will oversee the installation of this equipment and train personnel on its maintenance and use. The Organization will also support the rehabilitation of health care facilities and water and sanitation systems in Syria, with a special focus on the devastated city of Aleppo. Lastly, WHO will purchase mobile clinics and ambulances to ensure that critically ill and injured Syrians can be rapidly treated and transported to health care facilities for life-saving care.
WHO conveys its deepest appreciation to the Government of Japan for its generosity and its support of WHO’s work in the Syrian Arab Republic. This strong support will ensure better health outcomes for millions of people in need throughout Syria.
