About the programme

About the programme

The regional Stop TB programme aims to advance universal access to TB prevention, care and control, and to guide the regional response to TB threats and promote innovation.

The programme is leading the fight against TB in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. It envisions a TB-free Region by 2050.

The programme promotes implementation of the global Stop TB Strategy tailored to the regional and country contexts.

Core functions

The core functions of the regional Stop TB programme are to:

contribute to setting policies and norms for TB control in the Region and globally

provide technical support to countries to ensure proper implementation of the different components of the Stop TB Strategy

monitor and evaluate the implementation of the Stop TB Strategy

scale-up partnerships at country and regional levels for effective utilization of scarce resources.

Core activity areas

The regional programme focuses on the following core activity areas: 

providing regional leadership on matters critical to TB

promoting evidence-based policies, strategies and standards for TB prevention, care and control, and monitoring their implementation

providing, jointly with WHO headquarters and country offices, technical support to Member States, catalyze change and build sustainable capacity

monitoring the regional TB situation and measuring progress in TB care, control and financing

contributing towards shaping the TB research agenda and stimulating the generation, translation and dissemination of valuable knowledge

facilitating and engaging in partnerships for TB action.
