WHO designated 2020 the year of the nurse and midwife to acknowledge the work of nurses and midwives globally. A once in a generation opportunity to put nurses and midwives at the centre of global and health policy, the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife is a year to celebrate the 28 million nurses and 2 million midwives who make up half of the global health workforce. Evidence suggests that adequate numbers of well-educated nurses and midwives are vital to tackling the rise in communicable and noncommunicable diseases, and that they significantly contribute to reducing morbidity and mortality rates and to reducing adverse health events.
State of the World’s Nursing Report 2020

The report will provide a global picture of the nursing workforce and support evidence-based planning to optimize the contributions of this workforce to improve health and well-being for all. The report will set the agenda for data collection, policy dialogue, research and advocacy, and investment in the health workforce for generations to come.
