WHO Pakistan seeks tenders: Build, design and construct tube well (solar energy-based) and improve water supply network and storage at Landi Kotal

WHO Pakistan is seeking tenders in respect to work on the building, design and construction of a tube well (solar energy-based) and improvement of water supply network and storage at agency headquarters Landi Kotal (Khyber agency, Federally Administered Tribal Areas).

Technical and financial proposals (to be submitted in separate envelopes) are required from approved pumping machinery suppliers. The bid will first be assessed on the basis of technical proposals. The firm should have experience of installing more than 500 water supply schemes in the past 3 years. The firm applying for the tender must have test bed facility to carry out pump performance acceptance test witnessed by third party inspector as per ISO-9906 standard. Each of the offered pump set models must undergo this witness test prior to supply and installation.

Updates on the Pakistan earthquake, 3 October 2013

Situation overview

3 October 2013 -Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Baluchistan reported that earthquake caused 376 (330 from Awaran and 46 from Kech) deaths with 594 injuries reported from Awaran and 240 from Kech. The official data reveals 160,000 people affected in district Awaran and 25,000 people in Kech. The updates also include 32,000 affected families in Awaran and 5,000 families in Kech whereas 20,000 houses in Awaran and 1000 houses in Kech are partially or completely damaged. PDMA Balochistan has declared UCs Awaran, Teertaij, Gishkore, Gajjar, Nokjo & Parwar “Calamity hit areas” in Awaran while Dandar and Hoshap in Kech. PDMA Baluchistan has allowed all United Nation Agencies for localized response, however, all national and local NGOs have to obtain NOC from government before implementing any project.

In Tehsil Mashkai and Awaran, most of the health facilities are damaged and non-functional; DHQ Awaran is providing health care services to the affected people. In Awaran 7 BHUs are affected, 3 BHUs are fully damaged and 2 partially damaged while 2 BHUs are intact. Eight Civil Dispensaries in Tehsil Awaran are damaged and no proper health care services are available. Another request of medicines received from DG Health Services, asking for 1 Inter Agency Emergency Health Kit (IEHK) and 3 Diarrheal Disease Kits (DDKs) along with anti-malarial medicines, Bed nets, and Environmental Health related items for the affected districts of Balochistan. District Health Officer Awaran requires urgent support of LLINs and RDTs for malarial medicines.

WHO support to Pakistan on dengue fever

The WHO country office in Pakistan is providing technical support to the Government of Pakistan in its response to the epidemic of dengue fever. The current epidemic has caused to date 16 580 confirmed cases and 257 deaths in Lahore and nearly 5000 cases and 60 deaths reported from the rest of the country.

WHO provides technical support, guidelines and capacity-building for planning and implementation in all three areas of prevention and control of dengue fever: vector control, case management and community awareness. This support is being provided to all three provinces facing the epidemic, namely Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh.

WHO is fully committed to improving the health of the population of Pakistan. It will continue in its efforts to assist Pakistan’s dengue response by providing situation analysis, guidelines for quality-assured interventions and capacity-building for health planners and care providers at all levels and in all provinces in Pakistan.
